Zumbi was the last leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, the largest and longest-surviving community of escaped enslaved people in colonial Brazil, located in what is now the state of Alagoas. Palmares survived for nearly a century, resisting repeated attacks from Portuguese and Dutch colonial forces, and at its height was home to thousands of people who had built their own self-governing society.
Zumbi took over leadership of Palmares in the 1670s and continued resisting colonial forces until his death on November 20, 1695. That date is now observed in Brazil as Dia da Consciência Negra — Black Consciousness Day — a national holiday recognizing Afro-Brazilian history and culture.
In Capoeira, Zumbi's name shows up across songs as a symbol of resistance, freedom, and Black identity. Singing about him isn't just history trivia — it's part of how Capoeira keeps its own origins as a survival art alive inside the Roda, generation after generation.
